What to Consider Before Replacing a Boundary Fence
Neighbour agreements, boundary location, materials and practical steps before replacing a boundary fence in Queensland.
Talk to your neighbour early
Agreeing on style, height, cost sharing and timing upfront avoids disputes. The Queensland Government provides information and forms relating to dividing fences.
Confirm the boundary
If you are unsure where the boundary is, a registered surveyor can confirm it. Fences are usually built along the existing line unless there is reason to question it.
Consider levels and retaining
If ground levels differ either side, a plinth or retaining wall may be needed beneath the new fence, and design requirements may apply.
Plan for pets and access
There may be a short period without a fence. Plan for pets and security, and make sure the contractor has access from both sides if needed.
